NSS Aapda Mitra Report

Report on NSS Aapda Mitra Camp

‘Aapada Mitra’ Community is the first responder to any kind of disaster. Quick and prompt response of community members during initial few hours of occurrence of any disasters save many precious lives and properties. Community level volunteers play a very crucial role in saving lives and properties during the initial period of disaster. If theses community level volunteers are trained on different techniques of disaster response like Search & Rescue and First-Aid techniques, they can respond to any disaster effectively and efficiently.

The 7 days Residential Aapda Mitra Camp was successfully organized by the National Disaster Management Authority run by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Raipur, Government of Chhattisgarh at The National Disaster Training Centre, Raipur from 2nd February 2026 to 8th February 2026 with total 132 volunteers from all the colleges of Raipur.

The objective of the camp was to create awareness and build readiness among volunteers for the disaster management and emergency response. The camp aimed to train students to act as the first responders during any natural and man-made disasters and to serve society in times of crisis.

The Camp was directed under the intense guidance of Dr. Renu Maheshwari, Principal (S.R.P. Government College Bhatagaon, Raipur), and Dr. Nidhi Bhatt, NSS Programme Officer of the college. Ten NSS volunteers (5 girls & 5 boys) from the college, actively participated in the camp.
On the very first day of the camp, the registration process of the volunteers was done from 8:30 to 11 am.

From the second day of the camp, the daily schedule goes like this:
All the volunteers used to start their day with waking up early at 5:00 in the morning. They would do PT from 6:00 to 7:00 a.m, followed by a one-hour break.

Breakfast was served from 8:00 to 9:00, classes run from 9:00 to 12:45 p.m, and lunch was from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. After 2:30 there was class till 5:30 pm. From 5:30 to 7 p.m. there was a break and at 7 p.m.volunteers gathered in the ground for their Roll calls. Finally, after dinner from 8 to 9:30 pm, they go to their beds.

During the camp, volunteers were provided training on various aspects of disaster management such as types of disasters, disaster preparedness, first aid, search and rescue techniques, fire safety measures, evacuation procedures, and crowd management. Resource persons and trained officials explained the importance of quick response, coordination, and community participation during emergencies. Practical demonstrations and mock drills were also conducted to enhance hands-on learning and confidence among the volunteers.

Special sessions were organized on basic life-saving techniques, emergency communication, and the role of Aapda Mitras in supporting administration and local communities during disasters like floods, earthquakes, fires, and cyclones. Volunteers were encouraged to develop leadership qualities, discipline, and a sense of responsibility towards society.

The camp proved to be highly informative and beneficial. It strengthened the disaster response capacity of NSS volunteers and motivated them to serve as Aapda Mitras, ready to assist people in need during emergencies.

At the very last day of the camp on 8th February, Examination (Theory and Practical) was given. The program concluded with a vote of thanks of Mr. Chamman Sahu, instructor at the training centre, acknowledging the efforts of the organizers, trainers, and volunteers. The volunteers were awarded with certificates at the end of the camp.

Overall, the NSS Aapda Mitra Camp was a meaningful initiative. Aapada Mitra scheme is a good platform to develop the skill and knowledge of community level volunteers on disaster response at the grass roots. This would immensely contribute towards building disaster resilience.
